Paints and other building materials prior to 1978 may contain lead. Paint that is chipping and peeling can expose the homes occupants to this hazardous material. In many older homes lead based solder was used to join water pipes.

 

Lead may cause growth and learning disabilties in children and problem pregnancies, high blood pressure and digestive problems in adults.
